Use a quality vector graphics program, such as Adobe Illustrator, the most comprehensive vector art program. It uses advanced mathematical equations and has a high level of user friendliness, making it an ideal choice for advanced artists and beginners alike.
Import a hand-drawn image to Illustrator using a scanner. Set the scanner to 400 dots per inch. The optimal choice for image size for importing hand-drawn images to Illustrator is 400 dpi because it allows almost all of the details of an image to be shown. Save the image on the computer in a folder of your choice. To import the image to Adobe Illustrator, go to the file menu and click "Place." In the dialog box, browse folders and select the image that you would like to trace over in Illustrator.
Go to the layers panel. Name the layer with the hand-drawn line art "rough". This will be the rough draft that will be traced over with the pen tool. Set the opacity to 50 percent so that you don't confuse it with the new line art.
Begin tracing over the line art using the "pen" tool. The pen tool is often used to create line art in illustrator. It creates vector lines that can easily be resized and maintain a clear, crisp appearance. Make sure that the color is set to black and the stroke is set to 1 point. Lines larger than 1 point are often not used in comics because they are too thick.
Delete the layer that contains the hand-drawn line art. This can be accomplished by going to the layers panel, right-clicking and then selecting "delete" from the menu. You can also delete it by selecting the layer and using the keyboard shortcut "CTRL-D."
Save the image in the proper format. Vector images can easily be saved in the Adobe Illustrator format by going to the file menu and selecting "Save As" with a .al extension. Illustrator files, however, cannot be read outside of Adobe, which will make it impossible to place on them on the web. If you'd like to place your comics on the web, save the file in a PDF format by going to the file menu and selecting "Save As". In the dialog box, select "PDF." This will make the files viewable on the web and in print.
