How Do I Get DirecTV to Upgrade My Equipment to HD?

High definition (HD) TV provides a much clearer picture than standard definition. If you currently have DirecTV and want to upgrade your service, there a few simple ways to do this. DirecTV has twice as many HD channels than the average cable provider. DirecTV also has the most movies in 1080p HD, the highest quality of HD and the same quality as Blu-ray.
  1. Equipment

    • Before you upgrade your DirecTV service to high definition, make sure you have the proper equipment. You should first check to make sure your TV is capable of showing channels in high definition. If you are unsure, refer to your TVs owner's manual. Next, make sure your DirecTV receiver is a high-definition receiver. If it is not, you will need to purchase a high definition receiver through DirecTV or an electronics store. The receiver should come with a HDMI cable; you should not need to purchase an extra one.

    Phone

    • One way to upgrade to high definition is over the phone. This can usually be done using DirecTV's automated service where you say commands into the phone instead of talking to a representative. Make sure you have your account number with you as you place the order. This verifies your account and also makes sure the upgrade goes to the proper location. Make sure to speak clearly when talking to the automated operator because it can become confused.

    Internet

    • With an Internet upgrade, you also will not have to talk to an automated operator; everything will be done on your computer. You will first have to make an online account with DirecTV. You will need your account number to verify the account just like you would over the phone. Once your verify your account, you can follow the instructions for upgrading to high definition by clicking the "HD" tab. This will take you through a step-by-step process.

    Channels

    • When you have your DirecTV upgraded to HD, you might notice you have both HD and standard definition channels listed in the viewer's guide. The HD version should be listed first and will be put into sub channels, like "245-1."

    Resolution

    • To make sure your TV is set to the optimal viewing resolution, press the "Menu" and go into the parental, favorites and setup sections. From here, select "System Setup" and choose "HDTV." You can now choose the resolution that your television will display.
