WICU-12 was the first television station to begin broadcasting in Erie. The station signed on the air March 15, 1949. WICU-12 is an NBC affiliate station that broadcasts free over the air on VHF channel 12. Numerous cable systems also carry the channel in others parts of Pennsylvania as well as Ohio and New York.

WQLN-54 is Erie's Public Broadcasting Station affiliate. The station began broadcasting Sunday, August 13, 1967, with the goal of using communications as a means of stimulating, enriching, educating and entertaining the public. The station has the distinction of being among the first to receive a $10,000 grant from the Children's Television Workshop to implement the "Sesame Street Preschool Education Program Initiative."

WSEE-35 is Erie's CBS affiliate. Both WSEE-35 and WICU-12 are owned by Lilly Broadcasting of Erie. According to the Erie Press & Tower, in May 2009, Lilly Broadcasting merged the news teams of WSEE and WICU, resulting in the reduction of approximately a dozen positions for both on-air and production staff.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group owns, operates or provides programming services to more than 60 broadcast televisions stations across the United States, including two stations in Erie. Nexstar acquired WJET-24, the city's ABC-affiliate, in 1998. Nexstar also maintains a time-brokering agreement with WFXP-TV, also known as FOX-66.
