Television Stations in Youngstown, Ohio

Youngstown, Ohio, is in the Mahoning Valley about 65 miles southeast of Cleveland and 61 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Youngstown has its own metropolitan area but is often included as part of the Pittsburgh Tri-State area and Greater Cleveland. The city is served by several affiliate stations but four television stations are specifically licensed for Youngstown: WKBN, WFMJ, WYTV and low-powered WYFX-LP.
  1. WKBN-TV

    • WKBN-TV is the CBS-affiliated television station for Youngstown, and it broadcasts a high-definition digital signal on UHF channel 41. WKBN is Youngstown's first television station, going on the air in 1953. According to the WKNB website, it was the first UHF station in Ohio and the sixth in the U.S. By 1963, the station also became one of only nine in the country to operate with a million watts of power, giving viewers a better television picture. WKBN-TV now broadcasts in high definition with a transmitting power of 700,000 watts that reaches more than three million viewers. WKBN is owned by New Vision Television and its slogan is, "Where your news comes first."

    WFMJ-TV

    • WFMJ-TV is the NBC-affiliated television station for Youngstown, and it broadcasts a high-definition digital signal on UHF channel 20. WFMJ-TV is the only locally owned and operated station in Youngstown and, according to the WFMJ-TV website, it's one of the few stations left in the country that is still locally owned and operated. It's owned by the Maag family, which also owns Youngstown's major newspaper, the Vindicator. Its slogan is "More local news," and the station is also known for its sports coverage. The television station started the area's first expanded Friday night high school football coverage with The Overtime Report.

    WYTV

    • WYTV is the ABC-affiliated television station licensed to Youngstown and is a sister station to WKNB. It broadcasts a high-definition digital signal on UHF channel 36. Owned by Parkin Broadcasting of California, it is operated by New Vision Television though a shared services agreement and shares a studio on Sunset Boulevard in Boardman Township with both WKNB and WYFX. The station has three digital subchannels: MyYTV, My Valley Weather and WYTV-DT2. WYTV's slogan is "We believe in this valley," and its newscast is the only one in the market in the 5:30 p.m. time slot.

    WYFX-LP

    • WYFX runs programming from the FOX network and is a low-power station operating on 25 kilowatts. It is owned by New Vision Television. WYFX shares studio space with WYTV and WKNB. Known as Fox Youngstown, its slogan is "The valley's only 10 p.m. news," and it is the only station in the market to host an hour-long prime-time news broadcast.
