The ABC affiliate in Columbus, Georgia, WTVM-9, is known as "The News Leader" in the Columbus area. Going on the air on as WDAK-TV in October 1953, this station was the first to hit the airwaves in Columbus and was then jointly-owned by Allen Woodall, Sr. and Martin Theaters. Martin became the sole owner in 1956 and changed the station's call letters to WTVM-TV (for Television Martin). The channel also moved to VHF Channel 9 to allow the station to better serve a larger segment of the population in western Georgia and eastern Alabama.
WTVM-9 broadcasts six newscasts a day in addition to two newscasts for sister stations WXTX-54, the local FOX affiliate.
