Independent Television Stations in Southwest Virginia

Southwest Virginia is a mostly mountainous area of the state that includes the cities Roanoke and Blacksburg. The region is home to a few independent television stations that aren't affiliated with any parent network such as NBC or PBS. These stations broadcast a wide range of programs, including many religious, government and educational shows, and live broadcasts.
  1. WTOB

    • Serving the community of Blackburg since 1986, WTOB offers a range of access programming for local government and community. Blacksburg High School Football, Meet The Farmer, Down Home Virginia, Army Newswatch and Road To Recovery are examples of WTOB's programs. You'll also find live and taped broadcasts of Blacksburg town council meetings, church sermons and planning commission meetings. To watch WTOB, tune your TV to channel 2 in Blacksburg or channel 16 if you're receiving your signal on the Virginia Tech campus.

    RVTV

    • Roanoke Valley Television, or RVTV, is an independent public access channel available in Roanoke County, Virginia. According to RVTV's website, "no federal, state or local tax dollars are used to operate RVTV." Regular weekly programs include Inside Roanoke, Spotlight on City Schools, Roanoke County Today and Accent Excellence. The station also broadcasts live Roanoke City Council, Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and City of Roanoke Planning Commission meetings and hearings. You can watch RVTV on channel 3 in the Roanoke area.

    WDRL 24

    • This independent station broadcasts from Danville, Virginia and serves the areas of Roanoke and Lynchburg. WDRL 24 offers a range of programming including many syndicated shows like Family Feud, Cold Case Files, Judge Hatchet, World News Journal, American Idol Rewind, Laguna Beach and The Hills. The station also broadcasts many religious programs such as Jesus Revealed, Shepherd's Chapel, Joyce Meyer, Life Today, Great Canaan Land and Prayer of Faith Temple. For young viewers, WDRL has shows like Kids Cooking For Kids, Wild About Animals, Lassie and Ultimate Choice.
