How to Draw Gaara From Naruto

Gaara is a character from the Japanese anime Naruto, and many of the techniques that you use when drawing anime and manga apply to recreating Gaara. Manga requires that you first draw a simple outline (called guide lines) of squares, ovals and rectangles that you use as a guide for complicated features. The quality of the pencils and paper you use is a personal choice, but many artists use regular mechanical pencils and sketch pad paper. You can use special pens and drawing materials if you want, but they are not required.

Instructions

    • 1

View an image of Gaara, and print it or keep it open in your browser so you can refer to it as you draw the figure.

    • 2

Draw the first guide lines for Gaara's head, which is one horizontal straight line for his forehead; the line should go across most of the page toward the top. Sketch your guiding lines lightly so you can erase the simpler lines as you shade in the more difficult aspects of Gaara's features.

    • 3

Sketch a line from each end of the forehead guideline, at about a 45 degree angle, approximately one-third of the way down the page. Connect the two lines by drawing a rounded mound, with the rounded edge pointing downward, which will become Gaara's chin.

    • 4

Etch two parallel guide lines down the center of the outline of Gaara's face. About a third of the way down from the top of the head trace a perpendicular line straight across. These lines help you center and correctly draw Gaara's eyes, nose and mouth.

    • 5

Draw a short, straight line vertically down from the head sketch, and then add a large rectangle, with the long sides vertical, below the straight line. This serves as the guidelines for Gaara's neck and upper torso.

    • 6

View the image of Gaara again and begin adding the details that make Gaara distinctive from other manga and anime characters.

    • 7

Draw in his spiky hair on top of the outline for his face and leave a section on his forehead, above his left eye, where you will draw the tattoo on his forehead. Add the Chinese character for love, which is Gaara's tattoo, above his left eye.

    • 8

Create his eyes where the two parallel guide lines meet the third perpendicular guide line that runs across the top third of his face. Shade in heavy black lining around Gaara's eyes.

    • 9

Draw his nose by inking in two dots connected with a slightly downward-pointing half oval. Finish his mouth with a simple and tiny straight line. It is important that his eyes are the distinctive aspect of his face and not his mouth or nose.

    • 10

Pencil in the details of Gaara's collar or create his cloak with a V-shaped opening at his neck. The clothing you add is dependent on whether you want to sketch a younger or older version of Gaara.

    • 11

Sketch in the details of Gaara's upper body. Around the rectangular guide line for his body, draw in his shoulders and upper arms, with his arms crossing in the middle of his body.

    • 12

Erase the guide lines and color in your drawing. Gaara's hair is red and his clothing is normally various shades of brown. Make note of the image of Gaara you are viewing, and recreate the colors. Or, color your sketch as you prefer.
