How to Draw American Dragon Jake Long

Skateboarder Jake Long does more than tear up a half pipe. He is also part of a long line of dragons, which saddles Jake with a destiny: to unlock his powers and protect his home of New York City from mystical enemies. Jake's adventures take place within the animated series titled "American Dragon: Jake Long." Fans of the show can draw and color pictures of Jake and his friends. These pictures can be created by mimicking the simplified art style used in the show with a strong emphasis on rectangular shapes and arches.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate pictures of Jake Long that you will use as references. These can feature Jake in different actions and poses and help you draw an accurate picture of the character.

    • 2

Draw an "L" with a curved corner. This will form the front of Jake's face. The size of the "L" will dictate the size of Jake's head and so take note when you're starting the drawing.

    • 3

Begin at the top of the "L" and draw a line to the right. While drawing this line allow it to form two gradual arches. This is the start of Jake's hairline. At the end of the line, bring it straight down so it matches the center of the "L." Draw a rectangle at this spot for Jake's ear.

    • 4

Draw Jake's hair by creating four spikes on the top of his head. The center spike should be larger than the others, and the end spikes should be much smaller than the rest.

    • 5

Add Jake's facial features. His eyes are drawn with two circles with an arch at the top of each. His nose is a small arch with a slight curved line at the top. Draw his mouth in any shape to obtain the expression you wish. His eyebrows are thick with a width the same size as his eyes.

    • 6

Draw two lines at the bottom of Jake's face to make his neck. These lines should then connect to the collar of his jacket. Jake's Jacket can be drawn with a rectangle for his torso and two thinner rectangles for each of his arms. Add a circle to the front left of his jacket and one long oval on each jacket sleeve.

    • 7

Create Jake's jeans with one line on each side of the bottom of his jacket. Add pockets to each side of the jeans with small rectangles. Create Jake's legs by drawing a line down the center of his pants that starts slightly below the end of his jacket.

    • 8

Make Jake's hands by either using a circular shape for a fist or a large rectangle attached to a small rectangle for his fingers and thumb.

    • 9

Draw two lines at the bottom of each of Jake's pant legs. These lines should be drawn near the center of each leg and should only extend downwards slightly as they are Jake's ankles. Draw a curved line at the bottom of each ankle and then two parallel lines downwards for Jake's socks.

    • 10

Create the outline of Jake's shoes with one oblong shape at the bottom of each of Jake's socks. Flesh out the shape of the shoes by sharpening up the rear of each shoe with a straight line and straitening the bottom of each shoe. Erase extraneous pencil marks.

    • 11

Add additional details using your reference photos. Sharpen shapes that seem too soft as well as adding curves to decrease any lines that are too sharp. Go over your final lines with a thin black marker or pen.

    • 12

Color in the your picture of Jake Long using the colors worn by the character in the show. Jake's hair should be primarily black with green tips, his jacket should be red and his jeans should be light blue. Use colored pencils to contrast with your ink outline.
