How to Make Movie Clips

Whether you are an individual wanting to edit your home movies or a business owner that wants to attract new customers, editing your movies into movie clips can be easy. You can take your old movies and edit out the embarrassing moments from your video and add music. You can also take those embarrassing moments and make a bloopers movie clip with sound effects. Businesses can take footage of their products or explain essential aspects of their business for potential clients by creating movie clips.

  • Movie creator (Adobe Premier Pro or Windows Moviemaker)
  • Camcorder/VHS/Hi 8 tape/Mini DV tape/DVD/Camera
  • RCA cables
  • S-Video cable (optional)
  • USB cable (optional)

Instructions

      Open your movie creator program. A pop-up will appear. Click "OK" to create a new project. You will have a timeline and a project box. Your timeline is where you will work on your project. Your project window will hold all your uploaded files for your project.

      RCA cables used to transfer video and audio

      Connect your RCA cables that came with your camera to your computer. Your RCA cables are a set of three cables. Red and white are for audio and yellow is for video. You can also use the S-cable in place of the yellow RCA cable. If your camcorder or tape player came with a Mini-USB cable you can also use that in place of the RCA cables. Your Mini-USB cable will have a regular sized USB plug to plug into your computer on the other end.

      Click your "File" tab and select "Record." Press "Play" on your camcorder or tape player. Your movie will record into your project. You can also use the red circle button on your timeline to record your movie.

      Press your "File" tab and select "Stop" to stop recording your movie from your camcorder or tape player. Press the "Stop" button on your camcoder or tape player.

      Follow the same steps for other movies to be used for your project. Your recorded movies will appear in your project box along with the audio to your movie.

      Import movies to your timeline. If you have movies on file, you can import them. Click your "File" tab and select "Import." A pop-up will appear. Select your movie file to import. This will place your file into your project box. Use this step to import audio (wave) files to your project box.

      Drag your movies from your project box to your timeline using your mouse. Place each movie on its own layer in your timeline. Your new layer will automatically appear when you drag your movie onto your timeline. Expand each layer by clicking on the down arrow. Your audio will appear below your movie file when you hit the down arrow and expand your layer.

      Cut each movie to your desired start and stop point. Use your "Cut" tool (scissors or saw icon) and place at your start point and left click your mouse to cut. Place your tool at your end point and left click your mouse to cut. If you cut your clip at the wrong place, use your mouse to extend your cut point to your desired point. Click on your cut point and drag your mouse to extend it. Repeat this step for all your movies.

      Alter your audio file to your movies. Left click your audio file if you have one, then right click with your mouse. A drop-down menu will appear. Select your "Detach" option. This command may be labeled as something else.

      Detach your audio file from your video file to replace it with other audio. After you detach your audio file from your video file, right click your mouse on the audio file and select "Delete" from the drop down menu. You can also drag the audio file to the "Garbage Can" icon at the bottom of your timeline. If you do not want to replace your audio, skip this step.

      Render your movie clips individually. Rendering takes your edited movie and makes it seamless. Drag your timeline bar at the top of your timeline and drag it to your movie start and end point. Click your "File" tab and select "Render." This will only render the movie clip and audio that it is for. Make sure there are no other clips underneath your layer to be rendered. Move your movie clips under your current layer out of the way by dragging them with your mouse. Repeat this step for all your movie clips. Rendering can take a while. Each rendered movie will become its own movie clip with audio as a movie file. Save each movie file with the appropriate name.

      Save your project.
