How to Visit Greta Garbo's Grave

The beautiful and peaceful Woodland cemetery in Stockholm, Sweden, is a tourist attraction in its own right. The beautiful landscaping and modern 20th-century architecture surround the resting place of so many. One of the most visited graves at Woodland cemetery belongs to the legendary actress Greta Garbo.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the subway from downtown Stockholm to get to the Woodland Cemetery. Get on the Green line and get off at the Skogskyrkogården stop. This ride takes only about fifteen minutes.

    • 2

Enter Woodland Cemetery though the main gate. Follow along the main path. This will take you past the large cross on the right side.

    • 3

Pass the columbarium on the left side. The columbarium looks like smaller-scale, modern-day Parthenon.

    • 4

Continue along the main path past the main chapel on the left-hand side.

    • 5

Turn left on the first side path after the main chapel. You will be headed towards a wooded area and will see a line of trees as a backdrop to many grave sites.

    • 6

See Greta Garbo's grave on the left side. The gravestone is simple and understated, much like the modern and simplistic architecture throughout the entire cemetery. Her headstone is of average size and simply states her name in cursive.

    • 7

Visit the Woodland Cemetery Visitor's Center as well. It is open from the end of May through the middle of September from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pick up a map of the cemetery to see other famous graves. Also check out the World Heritage Exhibit.
