How to Clean and Care for DVDs at Home

Gone are the days of VHS tapes. Most people now watch movies on DVDs. Unlike VHS tapes, DVDs are easily scratched and damaged if not properly cleaned and cared for. Smudges, dirt and dust accumulate on DVDs if they are not routinely cleaned. This can lead to a disruption in the movie you are watching. Cleaning and caring for DVDs properly will ensure that your movie plays smoothly and the DVD lasts for a long time.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning DVDs

    • 1

Wipe down the DVD with a microfiber cloth. These cloths are lint-free and will attract the dust.

    • 2

Fill a bowl with equal parts warm water and rubbing alcohol. Dampen a microfiber cloth with the alcohol solution. Wring out the cloth well.

    • 3

Wipe the DVD gently with the microfiber cloth. Wipe in a straight line from the rim and center hub of the DVD. This will reduce the chances of scratching the DVD.

    • 4

Prop the DVD up in a vertical position to allow it to air dry.

    • 5

Use window cleaner for an alternative method for cleaning DVDs. Spray a small amount of window cleaner onto a microfiber cloth. Wipe down the DVD, working in a straight line from the rim to the center. Allow the DVD to air dry.

    Caring for DVDs

    • 6

Hold DVDs only by the outer rim. Touching the surface of the DVD will leave smudges and fingerprints.

    • 7

Make certain the DVD is situated properly in the DVD player before closing the tray. The DVD should sit securely within the rim of the tray.

    • 8

Remove scratches from DVDs promptly. Although deep scratches can usually not be removed, small surface scratches may be able to be buffed out. Moisten your finger with water and apply a dab of plain, white toothpaste to your finger. Gently rub the toothpaste over the scratch in a circular motion. Clean the DVD as directed above once the scratch has been removed.

    • 9

Store DVDs in their cases when not in use. This will keep them from becoming scratched and protect them from dust.

    • 10

Keep DVDs away from hot surfaces, direct sunlight, heaters and radiators. Excessive heat can cause damage.
