How to Organize & Track Your Movie Collection

Organizing and tracking your movie collection can be a daunting task no matter how many movies you have. Along with physically organizing and tracking your movie collection on the shelves, using DVD profiler software can help you keep your collection in check. DVD profiler software like DVD Profiler, All My Movies and Movie Collector Plus creates a database to both organize and track all of your movies on your computer. Using a combination of organization methods, you can get your collection in order now and keep it organized so you never have to struggle to find a movie again.

Instructions

    • 1
Download a DVD profiler program to create your database.

Type "DVD Profiler" or "DVD Collection Organizer" into your web browser to search for free programs that can be downloaded. It is not necessary to pay for one of these programs because so many exist that are free.

Download and install the DVD profiler of your choice and save it to your computer.

    • 3

Open the program and enter the necessary registration information to set up your new movie database. The registration screen will pop up automatically once your download and installation is complete.

DVDs uncategorized can get lost or mixed up.

Take all of your movies off of the shelves. For each movie, find the UPC number on the back of the case by looking at the number on the bottom of the bar code and enter the UPC numbers in the DVD profiler software. The software will find the version of the movie you have and enter the information automatically into your new movie database. If it does not find your movie, enter the information manually in each category listed to classify it. Save often so data is not lost.

Reorganize your shelves first by sorting the movies into genres (comedy, drama, horror, action). Then, within each genre, organize the movies alphabetically.

For small movie collections, skip sorting into genres and sort all of your movies alphabetically only. It is a much simpler form of organizing and tracking small movie collections.

Putting your movies in alphabetical order on the shelves makes finding a movie easier.

Put all of the movies back on the shelves in their new alphabetized order.

    • 7

To track which movies you have on your computer, open the DVD profiler program from where it was saved, type the movie title, genre, year or actor in the database search bar and click "Search." Also, browse the entire database by checking the list, which should be already in alphabetical order.
