Go through your DVDs and make sure they're all in the correct cases. Clean them with a commercially available DVD cleaner and wipe the cases with a damp cloth to remove any debris or smudges.
Remove DVDs that you rarely watch or that you never plan to watch again. Give them to friends or family members, or sell them on sites such as Craigslist or eBay. Some video and music stores purchase used DVDs in exchange for cash or store credit.
Organize your DVDs alphabetically by title, or categorize them by genre, such as comedy, drama, romance, historical, horror, classic, action-adventure, foreign, musical, film noir and science fiction.
Store your DVDs in a closed cabinet or bookcase to prevent them from accumulating dust and debris. Every week or two weeks, go through them and make sure they're in the correct cases and organized alphabetically. Give them a quick dusting, too.
Add to your movie collection conservatively. Only purchase DVDs you or your children have seen and will watch again. Join an online video rental service so you can watch movies before deciding whether to buy them on DVD, or purchase used DVDs so that you don't spend a fortune buying movies you'll only watch once.
Examine your collection every six months and remove DVDs you don't plan to watch again. If they're in good condition, give them away, donate them or sell them.
