Magic Tricks for Kids to Do

Most kids love magic and enjoy performing tricks. Start out with tricks that impress but aren't difficult enough to be frustrating. Everything you need should be in your home. Practice a while, then put on a show for friends or family.
  1. Disappearing Coin Trick

    • Get a coin, glass, two sheets construction paper (both the same color) and a large handkerchief. Set the glass upside down on one sheet of construction paper and trace around it. Cut out the circle and glue or tape it to the top of the glass. Make sure the glue or tape isn't noticeable. Set the upside-down glass and coin next to each other on the other piece of construction paper.
Cover the glass with the handkerchief, covering the coin at the same time. Move the glass onto the coin. When you remove the handkerchief, it looks like the coin disappeared.

    Separating Pepper Trick

    • Put some water in a cup and sprinkle pepper on top. Rub some soap on your fingers before you do the trick, but don't let the audience see. Tell the subject to put their fingers in the cup to separate the pepper. When they do it, it won't work. When you do it, the pepper will separate because of the soap film on your fingers. (Place a small bowl of water and towel nearby so the subject can wash his hands.)

    Knot Trick

    • Tie a knot at one end of a rope. Grab the knotted end and place the other inside your hand. Shake your hand like you're trying to knot the rope and perform a magic spell by chanting magic words. Drop the knotted end of the rope so it looks like you tied a knot in it with one hand.

    Vanishing Cup Trick

    • Place a paper or plastic cup, coin and paper towel on a table and sit down. Place the cup over the coin and the paper towel over the cup. Move the cup to the side, directing the audience's attention to the coin. To hold their concentration, say something about the coin. Move the covered cup toward you and drop it onto your lap. Move the paper towel in the shape of the cup back on the table. When they look at the paper towel, smash it and drop the cup from your lap onto the floor. Lift the towel to show there's no hole in the table.

    Picking Card Trick

    • Face all the cards of a deck in the same direction. Put the bottom card upside down so when the deck is turned over, it looks like the top. Ask someone in the audience to pick a card. While the subject is looking at the card, turn the deck over. Have her put the card back in the deck. You'll be able to pick the card out of the deck because it's the only one facing that direction.
