Holy Grail Magic Trick Revealed

The "holy grail" magic trick is a card trick whereby a seemingly ordinary playing card is torn into four distinct pieces and then, magically, restored to its original condition. The card can even be signed and handed out to a spectator at the end of the trick (if you perform it discreetly enough). While the result looks amazing, the trick is actually quite simple to achieve.
  1. Pre-Trick Preparation

    • The trick requires the magician to destroy a playing card prior to performing the trick. Magicians who wish to use an entire deck (which would thereby increase the allure of the trick) must destroy an entire deck and apply this process to each individual card.

Begin by carefully tearing the front of the card away from the back of the card. Playing cards have a front and a back; these sides can be separated. The trick is to be extremely patient and careful; you need to keep the card in almost-perfect condition. Once the two sides are separated, tear the back of the card (the non-face side of the card) into four pieces. Act as if you were a surgeon here and try to make the tears slight and unnoticeable. Next, apply re-mount spry to the torn pieces. This will allow you to stick the four pieces back together. The spray also has some glossy properties which make the tears difficult to notice. Once sprayed, re-assemble the back of the card. Finally, re-attach the back of the card to the face of the card with a glue stick. Be careful with the glue: you do not want to have bubbles or other noticeable signs that the card has been glued.

    The Trick

    • Once you have completed the pre-trick preparation, you can perform the trick. Remember: if you want a spectator to draw a card from a deck of cards, you need to complete preparation for every card; you do not want to run the risk that a spectator will draw the wrong card.

Show the audience the front of a prepared card to convince them that it is unaltered. If you like, you may even sign the card to give it the appearance that it is unique and that you are not switching the card in the middle of the trick. Show the audience the front of the card. Carefully tear the card along the lines in the back. If you have prepared the card carefully, the lines will be almost untraceable. Further, since you did not rip the face of the card, the audience will see the card ripping and actually hear it tearing. Tear the card into the four pieces. Show the audience each piece. Then, as if by magic, carefully (carefully being the key here) re-assemble the card using the re-mount spray's properties to force the card back together. When you have finished, it will seem as if the card has been fully restored.

You may give the card out after the trick. Be careful here, however. It is a good idea to examine the card yourself and admire your handy-work. If you can discern the tear marks, do not give the card out. Instead, allow a quick inspection and take the card back. Keeping the card yourself is probably a good idea when you first begin practicing this trick.
