Bar Room Tricks

The atmosphere of a bar is generally one of individuals having a good time and hanging out with one another. New friends are quickly met, and patrons typically get along. To impress friends and strangers alike, try performing bar tricks. These sleights of hand are sure to impress and will make people enjoy the night even more.
  1. Trick of the Mind

    • Turn your back to a volunteer and tell him to place a coin in either his left or right hand. Tell him to close his hand and place it on top of his head. Close your eyes and pretend to think very hard to buy some time and distract your volunteer and the audience for approximately 30 seconds to a minute. Then tell your volunteer to place his arms down to his sides. You are looking for the hand that is the palest due to blood escaping the hand when it was on his head. Point to the hand that is the palest and say, "The coin is in that hand," and you will be right.

    Trapped Bill

    • Grab two empty bottles and a dollar bill. Sit one bottle right-side up and sit a dollar bill on top of it. Turn the other bottle upside down and place it on top of the dollar bill. Tell everyone watching that you can remove the dollar bill without touching the bottles or tearing the bill. To successfully do this, hold the left edge of the bill with your left hand. Barely fold it up to create a groove. Look at the groove and notice the bottom of the groove; this is where you will be hitting it with the index finger of your right hand. Very quickly, hit the bottom groove with your index finger and the dollar bill will be removed.

    Floating Can

    • Hold the middle part of a can in your hand by placing a thumb on one side of the can with your fingers on the other side. Release the grip you have on the can and allow it to slide downward. As it slides down, slowly raise your hand upward. The trick to making the illusion that the can is floating in mid-air is to move your hand upward at the same speed that the can is moving downward. With enough practice, you will be able to time this movement just right and create this illusion successfully.

    Open Bottle with Newspaper

    • Fold a newspaper length-wise as tightly as possible. Bend it in the middle and press the edges together along the ends of the paper. You will now have a sharp edge at the end of the newspaper. Place the sharp point of the newspaper under the top of the bottle and press down as hard as possible. If the edge is sharp enough and you add enough force to the newspaper, the top will pop right off.

    Smoke Trick

    • Tear the strike area, or the part where you slide a match, off a matchbox and fold the strike area in half. Place it in an ashtray and set it aflame with a lighter. Allow it to burn for a minute then set the strike area aside. Notice there is a brownish substance left in the ashtray. Grab it and tell your victim you are going to make smoke magically appear. Place the substance between your thumb and index finger and begin to rub. As you rub your fingers together, a small stream of smoke will begin to escape your fingers.

    Pints and Shots

    • Fill three pint glasses and three shot glasses with a drink of your choice (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Ask someone to volunteer for your trick and tell the individual that you bet you can drink all three pint glasses before the individual drinks all three shot glasses. Instruct the individual that you must be given a head start and neither of you can touch each other's glasses. Also instruct the volunteer that he must start taking shots starting with the first shot and continuing to the second and third as soon as you drink your first pint glass and set it down on the table. Drink the first pint glass and sit it over the first shot glass of your volunteer. Since the volunteer cannot touch your pint glass, you can continue to drink the next two pint glasses and place them over your volunteer's shot glasses as you finish them.
