Magic Tricks With Coins & Wands

Magic tricks can be a fun, fascinating hobby that, when done properly, can amaze and entertain others. Among the easiest tricks for the novice magician to learn are those involving coins and wands, using sleight of hand to create an illusion that will have your friends wondering how you did it.
  1. The French Drop

    • The French Drop is not only a trick unto itself, but an important skill used in other tricks. One of the fundamentals of sleight of hand, the French Drop uses such skills as palming and misdirection to shift a coin from one hand to the other without the audience noticing, creating the illusion that the coin you were holding suddenly vanished. There are numerous books and websites (including YouTube) that provide detailed explanations of how to properly perform the French Drop, although practice, as in the perfection of most magic tricks, is the key.

    The Vanishing Coin

    • In this trick, you rub a coin into the back of your hand and make it appear to disappear. You'll need a pair of pants with cuffs. First, holding the coin in one hand, show it to the spectators, then rub it from side to side on the back of the other hand. Pretend to drop the coin, then bend down to pick it up, apologizing for your "accident." Rise up in one fluid motion, and while doing so drop the coin in one of your trouser cuffs. Then, maintaining the appearance that you're still holding the coin, continue rubbing the back of the same hand you were rubbing before. Stop rubbing with a flourish, and show the audience your empty hand.

    The Sticky Wand

    • In this trick, you can create the illusion that an ordinary wand held in a closed fist appears to stick to the hand instead of falling to the floor after opening your hand. You can accomplish this by using your other hand to grasp the wrist of the hand holding the wand. What the audience can't see is that you're using the middle finger of your wrist-grasping hand to hold the wand in place in your other palm when you open that hand, creating the illusion that there's nothing holding the wand in place except magic.

    Floating Wand

    • The floating wand trick requires a special wand that is available at a magic shop or specialty website. This particular "trick wand" has an elastic band attached to it that allows you to manipulate the wand as you hold it between your clasped hands. While you're covertly using the rubber band to move the wand up and down, the audience only sees the wand shifting and floating out of your hands.
