How to Make a Card Appear Out of Nowhere

You can learn how to do a magic trick that makes a card seem to appear from nowhere. The trick allows you to hold a card in a way that conceals it from the audience, creating the illusion that the card came from thin air. This type of illusion works well for parties, but attempt it only after you have practiced executing it properly several times. Practice in front of a mirror before you do it in front of an audience.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a stack of several cards in the palm of your hand with your palm facing you. (Don't use the whole deck when you're first learning.) Grip the cards horizontally between your fingers and the heel of your thumb. You shouldn't be able to see the cards when you look at the back of your hand. Check a mirror to see if the cards are visible, and adjust your grip until they aren't.

    • 2

Separate the top card with your thumb, grabbing the edge of the card with the pad of your thumb and sliding it up.

    • 3

Move the card up with your thumb until you can hold it securely between your thumb and the middle of your pointer finger. As you do this, move your whole hand forward quickly as if you are catching the card from the air.

    • 4

Make more cards in the deck appear by repeating these steps. After you have moved a card up from the deck and revealed it to the audience, let it fall down in front of you so that your fingers are free to grab and display the next card.
