Find a partner who is also keen to learn the dance. It is much easier to progress if you are dancing consistently with the same person.
Choose your music, several styles can be used for Western Swing dancing, as long as they have the 4/4 rhythm it requires.
Take your initial position, facing each other with hands held in front of you in the closed position.
Begin with the starter step, which takes four beats of the music. For the first two beats you will chasse to the left. This is a triple step pattern, made in a gliding fashion, that is made up of a step-together-step sequence. This means you move your left foot to the left, bring your right foot together with the left and then step out again with the left. For the next two beats repeat the chasse, but to the right. Your partner will move with you.
Try the push basic step next. Your arms should be exerting a light pulling pressure on each other. Begin with a chasse triple step to the left. Then move the right foot diagonally back with your weight over it and turn slightly to your left. Extend your arms outward and to the left, pushing your partner away from you. Then close the right foot back up to the left, reverse the turn and return your body to the normal position. The lady will have pulled her body weight away from you by moving her left foot back, and then returned by stepping sideways towards your right side
Practice these starter steps, which will give you the basic move, then begin to add some of the more advanced steps. These include the throwout, underarm pass, sugarpush, whip and others.
