Steps for the Moonwalk

The moonwalk is a dance move from the 1980s that became popular through the dancing skills of pop icon Michael Jackson. Jackson first performed the moonwalk in 1983 for one of his hit songs, "Billie Jean." The dance became popular quickly and often is referred to as one of Michael Jackson's trademark moves. The moonwalk mostly involves the feet and legs while the upper body remains fairly still. You can impress your friends on the dance floor by learning how to perform this move.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear socks but not shoes, at least while you're learning this dance move. It is possible to moonwalk while wearing shoes, but socks make it easier to slide your feet.

    • 2

Stand with your feet several inches apart and your right foot flat on the floor. Place your left foot slightly in front of your right. Raise your left heel so that only your toes are touching the floor.

    • 3

Slide your left toes backward, past your right foot.

    • 4

Raise your right heel as the toes on your left foot become level with your right foot. Place your left foot flat on the floor as you raise your right heel.

    • 5

Slide the toes of your right foot backward while your left foot remains flat on the floor. Slide your right foot until your toes are even with the center point of your left foot.

    • 6

Shift your weight back to your right foot and repeat the sequence as many times as desired. This move looks best when performed smoothly and quickly.
