How to Do the Hoedown Throw Down Dance

"Hoedown Throwdown" is a song with an accompanying dance from the Disney/Miley Cyrus vehicle "Hannah Montana: The Movie". Cyrus refers to the Hoedown Throwdown as the "big dance number" in the film, and legions of preteens are trying to learn the steps. While the entire dance is two minutes long and relatively fast, one verse and its actions repeat several times. The lyrics are, "Pop it, lock it, polka dot it/Countrify it, hip hop it/Put your hawk in the sky/Move side to side/Jump to the left, stick it, glide."

Instructions

    • 1

Stand straight, facing front, and extend your left arm straight out in front of you, stiffly, when Cyrus says, "Pop it."

    • 2

Bend at the waist and shift your hips to the right as Cyrus says, "Lock it." Bend your elbows so that your hands are at hip level in front of you. Bend your knees so that you are crouching slightly.

    • 3

Shuffle to the left by stepping sideways with your left foot and bringing your right foot to meet it as Cyrus says "Polka." Point your finger to the left as your foot goes left; point your finger to the right as the right foot meets it. Repeat the move for the words "dot it," for a total of two shuffles to the left and two finger wags.

    • 4

Hook your thumbs into your belt or the waistband of your pants for the phrase "Countrify it." On the word "country," bring the right heel out in front of you and touch it to the floor, then bring it back to center. On "fy it," repeat the move with the left foot.

    • 5

Kick your right foot out and cross your arms in front of you with the elbows bent on "hip." On "hop," bring your foot in so that your feet are side-by-side, pull your hands to your hips with the elbows still bent, and give a slight pelvic thrust. On "it," bend at the waist and bring your arms in front of you again, with the elbows still bent and your hands almost touching.

    • 6

Step to the right with the right foot and extend both arms out to the sides for "Put your." Immediately bring the arms in so the right arm is crossed over the left and your hands are flat at your elbows. For "hawk in the sky," raise your arms slightly so that your wrists are crossed and kick your left foot a couple of inches off the ground, as if sending the hawk flying. Bring your hands back to your elbows.

    • 7

Twist your upper body to the left, then to the right, with your arms still crossed, for "Move side to side."

    • 8

Swing your left foot back and jump to the left. Swing your right foot around, twist to the right and plant the right foot on the floor in front of the left, all as Cyrus says, "Jump to the left." You will be facing left at the end of the step.

    • 9

Put your feet together and your arms straight at your sides on, "Stick it."

    • 10

Step back with your left foot and slide your right foot back to meet it when Cyrus says, "Glide." Push away from you with your right hand as you do this.
