How to Do a Fouette

Ballet is difficult; there is no doubt about it. One of the most difficult tricks are fouette turns. They require extreme leg and ankle strength as well as control of one's entire body and lots of practice spotting. Even after you learn fouettes there are several variations one must master to be considered a great turner.

Instructions

Start in a prep for a regular pirouette. Ballet turns are turned out, back foot on the floor, jazz turns are turned in with the back heel off the floor. Prep for a right turn. Do a double pirouette making sure to connect your foot to your leg in passe.

    • 2

Spot around the second turn and plie as you come to the left corner of the room. Your head should still be spotting front. Extend your right leg out as your left leg plies. Hold your body tight, arms in a circle, with your spine straight.

    • 3

Open your right leg out to a second position, with your leg at 90 degrees. Releve on your supporting leg and straighten it. Open your arms out to second position. Allow your bottom foot to continue turning you around. As you reach the right side of the wall, start to bring your arms back to the circular position.

Bring your right leg back to passe, toes at the knee and turned out. Continue to spin on an elevated toe. Spot the front with your eyes so you head whips around and body follows. As you approach the left corner of the room, plie again and extend your right leg out. Releve and push your body around again.
