How to Perform an Arabesque

An arabesque is a common dance move that you'll definitely see performed if you go to a live ballet. An arabesque is an intermediate dance move and, like most ballet moves, requires an intricate blend of flexibility, balance, and strength.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify one wall as your "audience" and turn 90 degrees to your right.

    • 2

Stand with your heels touching and the toes of each foot pointed outward to a 45-degree angle.

    • 3

Place your right leg in front of you, leading with your big toe.

    • 4

Keep your right arm outstretched in front of you at shoulder height.

    • 5

Shift your weight to the ball of your foot.

    • 6

Raise your weight slowly to the ball of your right foot.

    • 7

Lift your left leg at the same time you shift your weight to your right leg.

    • 8

Stretch your right arm up above shoulder height and hold your left arm backward at shoulder height at a 45-degree angle to the center of your body,

    • 9

Continue to lift your left leg until it is slightly above hip level.

    • 10

Keep your knee straight and facing the wall you designated as the "audience."

    • 11

Make sure the big toe of your left foot is pointing toward the ceiling, especially when your left leg reaches the highest point. Don't droop your foot toward the floor.

    • 12

Lower your left leg towards the ground and cross your left leg in front of your right leg while bringing your weight back to your right leg.

    • 13

Perform an arabesque on the left side by reversing the above steps.
