New York City is home to some of the nation's most renowned and competitive ballet academies. These schools offer pre-professional training for serious dance students, as well as children's programs, adult classes, and intensive summer programs for dancers all over the country. Application for admittance to New York's ballet schools typically involves a competitive audition process.
  1. School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center

    • The School of American Ballet was co-founded in 1934 by Lincoln Kirstein and famous choreographer George Balanchine. The School functions as the New York City Ballet's official training academy. The school trains its students for careers as professional dancers and offers a ten-month winter term for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as a five-week summer program. Students often earn the opportunity to perform as extras in New York City Ballet productions.

    The Joffrey Ballet School

    • The Joffrey Ballet School was founded in 1953 in Greenwich Village. The school trains students for careers as professional dancers. Students learn both classical ballet technique and contemporary ballet technique. All classes enjoy live piano accompaniment.     American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School

    • The American Ballet Theatre offers several training programs for young dancers, including the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School and several different intensive summer programs. The pre-professional division of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, commonly abbreviated as JKO, provides students with classical training inspired by French, Italian, and Russian ballet traditions. Students take classes on ballet technique, pointe, partnering, and more. Students also have the opportunity to attend lectures about health, nutrition, and more.

    • Ballet Academy East, commonly referred to as BAE, was founded on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1979 by Julia Dubno.
