How to Cite a DVD in APA Style

When using quotes in a paper from a movie, show or documentary in DVD format, you must name your source in a reference list. The American Physiological Association style guide instructs that information such as a DVD's producer, director, year, country of origin and distributor is provided in citations.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name of the DVD's producer, a comma and the initial of the producer's first name. Place the word "Producer" in parentheses after the name and end with a comma. It should look like this: Smith, B. (Producer),.

    • 2

Use an ampersand (&) and list the director's last name followed by a comma and the initial of the first name. Write "Director" in parentheses and use a period after the last parentheses.

    • 3

Indicate the year the DVD was published in parentheses. Add a period. Write the name of the DVD in italics. In brackets, indicate the format by writing "DVD."

    • 4

Write the DVD's country of origin, a colon and the name of the studio that distributed the DVD. A complete citation will resemble this: Barnathan, M. (Producer), & Levy, S. (Director). (2003). Cheaper by the Dozen [DVD]. United States. 20th Century Fox.

    • 5

Cite a DVD with limited availability by writing "Available from," the distributor's name, a comma and the distributor's complete address after the country of origin.

    • 6

Follow this example of a limited availability DVD: Broussard, J. (Producer), & Broussard, Z. (Direcotor). (2009). Little Houses [DVD]. United States. Available from Benefilms, 100 Teal Lane Apt 52, Lafayette, LA 70507.

    • 7

Cite a DVD in-text by writing the DVD's name, a comma and the year in parentheses. Italicize the DVD's name. For example: (Casablanca, 1943).
