How to Cite the Webster's Universal Encyclopedic Dictionary in APA

Created by Merriam-Webster, Webster's Universal Encyclopedic Dictionary includes 330,000 words with an expanded definition for each that includes usage, word origin and synonyms. The dictionary also includes illustrations and useful information such as abbreviations and a style guide, according to the publisher, Barnes and Noble. When using APA style to cite the entire dictionary or a specific entry within the dictionary, you must use the correct format; otherwise, the citation will be incorrect.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the citation by using the APA format for a book with a corporate author. List the author as Merriam-Webster since the corporation created the dictionary. Place a period after the name.

    • 2

Use a space before writing the year 2001 in parentheses, which is the year the dictionary was published. Insert a period after the parentheses.

    • 3

Write the dictionary's title in italics the following way: Webster's universal encyclopedic dictionary. Since only one edition of this particular dictionary exists, you do not need to identify it as the first edition.

    • 4

List the location of publication as New York, NY and the publisher as Barnes & Noble Books. Use a colon between the publication location and the publisher's name. End with a period.

    • 5

Compare your citation to the following: Merriam Webster. (2001). Webster's universal encyclopedic dictionary. New York, NY: Barnes & Noble Books.

    • 6

Cite a specific entry in the dictionary using this example: Servile. (2001). In Webster's universal encyclopedia dictionary (p. 50). New York, NY: Barnes & Noble Books.
