How to Cite a Britannica Encyclopedia in APA Format

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) outlines a specific format for citing reference books, such as the Britannica Encyclopedia, both in the text of your paper and at the end of your paper in the reference list. APA style is designed to be concise, informative and uniform.

Instructions

    • 1

At the end of your paper, create a new page entitled "References." Each reference should be double-spaced and arranged alphabetically by the author's last name. A reference book without an author, like the Britannica Encyclopedia, should be alphabetized by the title of the article.

    • 2

Type the title of the encyclopedia article, capitalizing only the first word and any proper nouns. Follow the title with a period.

    • 3

List in parentheses the year your edition of the Britannica Encyclopedia was published, followed by a period.

    • 4

Follow this with "In" and the first initials and last names of the Britannica Encyclopedia editors, if you are using the hard copy of the encyclopedia, followed by the abbreviation "Eds." in parentheses. Then type a comma, followed by the words "Britannica Encyclopedia" in italic font. If you are using the online version of the encyclopedia, skip the editors' names and start typing the name of the encyclopedia in italics right after the word "In."

    • 5

In parenthesis, type the edition number (if any), then comma, then "Vol." and the volume number, then comma, followed by "pp." and the page numbers of the article you are citing. After closing the parenthesis, type a period.

    • 6

End with the city and state (abbreviated) where the encyclopedia was published, then a colon and the name of the publisher, which is Encyclopedia Britannica. If you are using the online version of the encyclopedia, instead of typing the location and name of the publisher, type "Retrieved from" followed by the URL to the article.

    • 7

For an in-text citation, in parentheses, type the first few words of the encyclopedia article's title in quotation marks, a comma and then the publication date, such as: ("Study finds," 2010).
