How to Fix Wrinkled Dust Covers on Books

Dust covers, also called book jackets, are the detachable outer covers of books. Dust covers are made of paper and have illustrations and lettering written on them. Wrinkled dust covers may lower the value of your books, especially if they're old. You can take your dust covers to a library or a printing company to remove the wrinkles, but the professional fees can be expensive. You can smooth the wrinkles on your dust covers, using an iron and some cloth.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the dust cover with a clean tissue paper or paper towel to get rid of any dust and other small debris.

    • 2

Open your book, then carefully lift the folded flaps of the dust cover that hold it to the front and back book covers. Set the dust cover aside.

    • 3

Lay the dust cover on a flat surface, ensuring the wrinkled side is facing upward. Smooth the wrinkles carefully with your fingers without overstretching. You'll still have some wrinkles that are visible on the dust cover.

    • 4

Place a thin cloth on top of the wrinkled areas of the dust cover.

    • 5

Turn on an iron and set it to the lowest temperature setting. Wait a few minutes for the iron to heat up.

    • 6

Place the iron on top of the cloth and slowly iron back and forth to smooth wrinkles. Lift up the cloth to see whether there are still wrinkles. Continue ironing until the wrinkles are completely flattened. Turn off the iron and let the cloth cool for about a minute before removing to prevent it from sticking to the dust cover.

    • 7

Open your book and place it back within the dust cover.
