Comic book boxes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Short boxes typically hold between 100 and 200 comics, and long boxes can hold as many as 300 comics. Drawer-style boxes are space savers because they are designed to fit into a hard shell that resembles a file drawer box, and let you stack boxes on top of each other without having to worry about damage. They're also convenient because you don't have to unload each box to find a comic; you just slide the box open and search for the comic you want.
Comic book bags are usually transparent sleeves made from polyethylene or polypropylene material, which helps insulate your comics from dust, debris and cold and hot temperatures. The bags are designed to be larger than most comics, and feature a flap that lets you tape the bag closed. For maximum protection, you can buy a special bag made of Mylar, which is a material that is resistant to oil, acid, moisture and pollutants. Mylar bags are more expensive than normal bags; they are usually priced at about $1 per bag, whereas normal comic bags cost between 10 and 25 cents per bag.
A backing board is a piece of cardboard cut to fit the size of a normal comic book. It is designed to fit into a comic book sleeve or bag and helps retain the shape and firmness of a comic. The best boards are those marked as "acid-free," because normal boards contain acids, which can adversely affect a comic over a long period of time. Backing boards are essential if you pack your comics into a bag and want to ensure they don't get bent.
Store comic book boxes in a cool, dry environment. Avoid placing your boxes on any surface that can get wet or retains a lot of moisture, especially if you are not using Mylar bags. A well-ventilated storage area with low heat and humidity is ideal for long-term storage of your comics. Excessive sunlight can turn your comics yellow and blur the ink used on the pages.
