Sony Reader Instructions

The latest version of the Sony Reader is the Touch Edition, as of 2010. There are three different sizes of the Sony Reader Touch Edition, but all models operate in the same format. The mechanics for the Touch Edition are a little different from the Sony Reader 500. Instead of navigating only through buttons, there is now a touch screen (which can function with the touch of your finger or the included stylus) plus a few hard buttons.

Charge the Sony Reader to its full capacity before powering up for the first time. The power supply can be plugged into either the computer (via USB port) or an AC outlet. If you are powering via a laptop, ensure the laptop's power supply is set on high, or the charge may not work for the Sony Reader. If the laptop isn't plugged into an outlet, please note the reader will consume the laptop's battery. The battery life icon is located in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

Slide the POWER switch, located on the top left edge of the reader, towards the direction of the arrow to turn on the Sony Reader. The screen will light up. If it is your first time powering up the device (or you are resetting), you will see the "Welcome" screen, which will guide you through the initial set-up (applying language settings, etc.) To turn the Sony Reader off, slide the POWER switch in the direction of the arrow again. This will put the reader in "sleep mode." If an hour has passed without any activity, the reader will automatically power down (this doesn't apply to audio files). Hold the POWER button for more than three seconds to completely power it down. Turning the POWER switch back on will bring up the last screen.

Import books and content by connecting the USB cord (supplied with reader) to your computer, which will start the eBook Library automatically. Click "eBook Store" and follow the instructions. Before the reader will accept any content, the "authorized" feature must be activated. You can check this by accessing the "Settings."

Push the HOME button to access the home menu. It is the interface of all functions and items on the Sony Reader. The home menu can be customized by tapping the Settings function. Select any function by tapping the screen with your finger or the stylus (like Notes or Books). Selecting Books will display all books loaded onto your library.

The following hard buttons are carried over from the previous model: The PAGE TURN buttons allow you to turn the pages of the book you're reading; the SIZE button fetches the size menu, wherein you can zoom in or out from a page; and the OPTIONS button performs various tasks, including page jumping and note writing.

Touch the screen while reading to access additional features and functions on the Sony Reader Touch Edition. Double tap the screen to create book marks, look up words, or highlight desired areas. Holding the finger down and dragging across the screen turns a page, magnifies words, or selects words. Double tapping and dragging will allow you to select chunks of paragraphs. Using the stylus, you can draw pictures or "write" on the page of an ebook.
