Do it Yourself: Book Printing

Do-it-yourself book printing is also known as self-publishing. In the days before mass publishing houses, book printing was left up to individual bookmakers. Writers knew how to print, press and bind their own books. In the computer age, book printing is even easier. It can be as simple as clicking "Print" or "Send." There are a variety of options available for those wanting to print their own books. You can have as much, or as little, control over the process as you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your book inside the computer. If it was written in a traditional word-processing program, save a copy as a PDF file. Or you can use several other printing software programs available.

    • 2

Design a cover. You can use online services such a Createspace, or purchase software such as BookCoverPro. Or you can hire a cover designer.

    • 3

Select a printing method. Offset printing is the closest to the traditional printing press. You can pay one of several companies to do this. However, it can be expensive and you will end up with a large volume of books. Print-on-Demand is less expensive than offset printing; you pay only for what you need when you need it.

Print and bind the book yourself. This involves printing your book out, sewing its pages together and assembling the book by hand. This is by far the cheapest, but also the most time consuming if you need more than a handful of books. Printing is as simple as setting your type in the computer, selecting scale and paper size. Binding is a much more detailed process. It requires creating a binding for the book, stitching the pages together, then gluing the pages and binding together in a book-binding press.
