Steps in Printing a Book

An authors who wants to bypass the trying to find an agent and publisher for his book can simply print the book himself using a self-publishing company. Books can then be sold where the author chooses. Self-publishing sites have simplified the process for authors and charge varying amounts to publish a book, with hardcover and softcover choices. Authors can print virtually any type of book from nonfiction to a family recipe book.

Instructions

    • 1

Research self-publishing companies to determine which best suits you and your book. Look at available options, rates and the length of time it takes to complete the process.

    • 2

Decide whether you want your book to be paperback or hardback. Paperback is the more economical option and can be binded with plastic comb and plastic coil, as well.

    • 3

Have your pages proofread, edited and typeset so that they are ready to send.

    • 4

Survey available paper and ink choices, choose your preference for the book. Most companies have a standard white paper with black ink, but some offer other options for an additional fee.

    • 5

Prepare the cover of your book yourself or let the company assist you with the design. If you have designed the cover yourself, you can just send it to the publishing company with the book's pages. Remember that the book's cover gives potential buyers their first impression of your book.

    • 6

Submit all the necessary items to the self-publishing company, following their guidelines. Some offer the option of submitting everything online, while others may need the items mailed to them.

    • 7

Pay the publishing fees. Every company has policies regarding this. Some require half up front and half before they ship to you, and others may ask for 1/3 up front, 1/3 when you send your approved proofs back to them and 1/3 after the books are printed.
