DIY Book Printing

Do-it-yourself (DIY) book printing means that the author prepares their manuscript for printing (edits and formats), designs the cover, markets the book and does everything but do the actual printing itself. There are a number of ways that an author can go about getting their book published and marketed to the right audiences, but it is all the responsibility of the author to make sure the book is successful.
  1. Finding the Right Printing Company

    • There is a selection of companies that print manuscripts "on demand." Most of these websites offer editing services and consulting for a fee (anywhere from $300 to $1,500) targeted towards first time authors. These services aim to give the author a better idea of what would help the book to sell and how they can market the book themselves or on the printer's website. Authors can also edit and format their book on their own, including creating their own cover design, and pay for the printing fees only.

Some on demand printing websites like Lulu and Booksurge (which is a part of Amazon) sell books that they have printed on their website. This is an added benefit because authors have the ability to link to their book on their own personal website or blog. All websites that offer this service take a cut of the profits from all books.

Cost is another item to consider, in addition to how soon the books can be printed and delivered and what the minimum print quantity is. The more books printed at once, the cheaper the price is per book. Most websites give authors the opportunity to print different formats (e.g., cookbooks, DVDs, mini books, calendars) for a more diverse choice when printing.

    Preparing the Manuscript

    • If the author is not paying extra to have their manuscript formatted and edited, they have to do it themselves. Be sure to pay careful attention to website's formatting guidelines. When the manuscript is not formatted according to the printer's specifications, they will either send it back or the book will be printed incorrectly.

Another aspect to be cautious in preparing the manuscript for printing is the editorial integrity. If the author feels as if they do not have the skill to edit their own manuscript or they are too close to it to be able to notice mistakes, there are a few options available. If the prices on the chosen printing website are too expensive, either choose another website with better prices or look to other avenues. Freelance editors can be found on editorial forums and Craigslist. Be careful, as they are the final say on the integrity of the manuscript. Ask for samples of their editorial work and an explanation of their experience.
