How to Self-Publish a Textbook

Textbooks are academic books used in classrooms or at home by students to learn course material. Textbooks are written by experts on the subject of choice as determined by their experience or education on the matter. They can be published by a publishing house or an independent publisher, or be self-published. To self-publish a textbook, the author will solely design, write and fund the book's publication and printing. Self-publishing requires time, funding and effort, but it is a desired option by many textbook writers because it allows the freedom to handle the publishing process on their own terms.

    • 1

Design a cover for your book in Adobe Photoshop. You will need to have a design that is original. If you choose to use photographs, you can only use photos that you have taken yourself, been granted the rights to or have purchased rights to online. The title of your book needs to be original also, and it should be set in the largest font on the cover. Make sure to include your name as the author as well.

Select a method for publication after the book has been written. Today you can either publish a book in print, which means making physical reproductions of the text, or you can publish online. Either way you can protect the rights to your own work and sell it for profit. The differences mainly occur in the initial funding required for both options.

    • 3

Copyright your book title and contents with the United States Copyright Office. If awarded a copyright, your book will be issued an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) which is how others will find your book in stores and library databases.

    • 4

Create the introductory pages, or front matter, of the book which follow the cover but precede the body of your textbook. This may include a title page, dedication page, page of copyright information, preface and table of contents.

    • 5

Combine all pages of your document and cover into one Adobe PDF file and one Microsoft Word file. If you are going to self-publish on the Web or market your product as a book on CD, you will want to publish as a PDF. Locked PDFs cannot be altered after publication, so your work will be protected. Note, then, that how the PDF appears is how the customer will see it. Make changes before file conversion. If you choose to hire, at your own expense, a printing company to make physical reproductions, they will appreciate having a version in a word processing program like Microsoft Word which they can manipulate to fit their needs.

Market your product through the appropriate channels. Approach well-known bookstores about carrying your textbook. Contact college professors, who choose the students' texts, to let them know you have a new resource available for purchase. List your text with online college book websites. Sell copies on Ebay or Amazon. Create a personal website where you can display sample chapters for professors and students to read. Make your book available for purchase on your site in physical form or via instant electronic download.
