Select a census year and a county or town to transcribe. Create your transcription in Word or other similar word-processing program.
Determine how you want to publish the book, paperback, E-book or hardcover. Select the self-publishing service that meets your needs. Create an account with that provider. Providers will require contact information and a royalty payment option to be completed before publishing. You will receive verification email. Respond, and begin publishing.
Review the content-upload guidelines. File types most generally accepted are EPub, Word and PDF. Upload the content. Review the content after the provider has modified it for its site. To proceed, acknowledge the review is OK. If there are errors, review your original submission and upload again to review.
Create a cover for your book. Providers have templates and multiple designs from which you can choose. You can also create custom covers by uploading your own artwork or paying the provider to create it.
Add an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) number to the book. An ISBN is a 10 or 13 digit number that identifies the book. Providers often provide a free ISBN or you can buy one through Bowker as a single number or bulk set of numbers.
Price your book. The provider will provide a minimum price, which can be set higher if you want. After establishing a price, order a proof copy of your book. Review the proof copy. If there are no errors, place the book on sale through the provider. If errors are found, review the original submission and order a new proof copy.
