How to Footnote a Dictionary

Missouri is known as the Show-Me State, an implication that residents of Missouri might be more skeptical than the residents of other states. The conscientious scientist and scholar, however, should be as skeptical as any Missourian. Both scientists and scholars seek to scrupulously document and support the work they do. If you use a dictionary in your research, conscientiously support that use for your "Show-Me" readers: footnote the dictionary in APA, Chicago or MLA style.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a superscript number after the closing period of the sentence you want to footnote.

    • 2

Place a matching number at the bottom of the same page.

    • 3

Use the following template to write your dictionary footnote after the number in APA style: "'Exogenous.' (2005). Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster."

    • 4

Use the following template to write your dictionary footnote after the number in Chicago style: "Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th ed., s.v. 'exogenous.'"

    • 5

Use the following template to write your dictionary footnote after the number in MLA style: "'Exogenous.' Def. 2b. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. 2005. Print."
