Begin your explanation of the reference or allusion you made to the play in the body of your text here. Begin with a conventional footnote phrase such as "See this or that scene," or an explanation that leads the reader to another related play.
Type the play's title following the introductory phrase. Use italics for the play's title. Insert a comma and then include the act, scene and line numbers directly after the title if you are referring to a specific section of the play. Use an uppercase roman numeral for the act number. Separate lines with a hyphen if you are referring to a section of more than one line. Place a period after this. Example: Tempest, II.ii.98-102.
Continue your explanatory note after the period. Keep the note as concise as possible. Provide a brief explanation of what about this play you are alluding to in the body of your paper or what this play has in common with the argument you are making in this particular section of the paper.
Place a period after your explanation.
