How to Cite Footnotes in MLA

An effective essay begins with quality research. Research is done well when it's cited properly. Modern Language Association (MLA) documentation can be difficult to understand, especially with complicated quotations such as those found in the footnotes of a text. A footnote is an aside that the author makes to the reader to provide further information. Because the context of the information is different than that of the main text, the citation must correctly express a different context.

Instructions

    • 1

Include the text that you wish to quote between two quotation marks. Be certain to use the proper punctuation.

    • 2

Use an open parenthesis after the closing quotation mark, then list the author's last name.

    • 3

List the page number of the quoted text.

    • 4

Use a lowercase "n" to indicate that you're quoting a footnote, directly followed by the number of the footnote. Close the parenthesis.

    • 5

Use a full citation in your bibliography by listing the author's name, the title of the text, the publishing information, and the page numbers you used. Insert a lowercase "n" after the page numbers followed by the number of the footnote to direct the reader to the precise passage.
