How to Footnote an Encyclopedia

Whether you're writing an academic essay or compiling notes for a term paper, knowing how to properly footnote an encyclopedia entry is important to ensure accurate citing. Creating a footnote for an encyclopedia can vary according to the style guide you must follow. The main style guides are: MLA, Chicago Manual of Style and APA Style.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the author(s) name, editor(s) name, date of publication, title of the article, publication name (Encyclopedia Britannica, etc.), volume number, article page number, publisher location and publisher name to create an encyclopedia footnote in APA style. Use this format for citing information taken from a physical encyclopedia set.

    • 2

Write the title of the article, publication date, name of encyclopedia, retrieval date and the website used to find the article to create a footnote for an online encyclopedia article in APA style.

    • 3

Place the title of the article in quotation marks, name of the encyclopedia and year published to create a footnote for an encyclopedia entry with no specified author. This format is the MLA style. For encyclopedia entries with a specified author place the full name of the author(s), title of the article, title of the encyclopedia and publication date.

    • 4

Write the name of the encyclopedia and author of the article, if available. Next to the author's name write the publication city, publisher and date of publication in parentheses. An example is, (New York: Encyclopedia Publishers, 2004). Follow this information by placing the abbreviation "s.w." and the keyword the article was found under. For example,: s.w. "movies" for an article regarding the movie industry. This is the Chicago Manual of Style format.
