Preschoolers can make fish to hang from the ceiling or from a mobile. To complete this project you will need two identical fish shapes from a piece of card stock. The preschooler can decorate the two halves with markers, crayon, glitter and other craft materials. Then adults can help them staple the pieces together and stuff the inside with cotton balls. The fish can hang by a ribbon from the ceiling or from a wire hanger for a colorful decoration. This project can also be done with starfish, octopus, shark or turtle shapes.
Wind socks can be made with a foam cup and crepe paper streamers. The crepe paper is thread through holes poked in the bottom of the cup. The preschooler can use art supplies to decorate the outside of the wind sock, but adults should help to make sure they don't crush the foam cup. You can hang several wind socks from a fence post or tree branch with yarn for an artistic addition to your yard, or keep the wind sock as an inside decoration to make it last longer.
Hats are a visual art project that can double as a dramatic art activity once completed. You can create hats from sheets of butcher paper, brown paper bags or newspaper. Adults can help form-fit the sheet of paper to the shape of the child's head with masking tape to create the hat form. The preschooler can then remove the hat from his head and decorate it with colorful pieces of paper or other materials glued on, with paint or with faux or real flowers.
Other hats can be made for a fireman, policeman, nurse, construction worker or doctor with a strip of card stock. A headband strip becomes the base for a shield-like piece of card stock designed to display their favorite occupation.
