Take a fall walk with your preschooler and collect some pine cones. You will only need one pine cone for each squirrel you want to make. Cut out a head, arms, legs and tail shapes from brown construction paper. Decorate your body shapes with a black crayon. Draw circles for eyes and rectangles for teeth. Glue your shapes onto your pine cone with white glue. As a variation, use pipe cleaners for arms or a fluffy tail instead of paper.
Cut an empty toilet paper tube down the long side and gently flatten it slightly. This will allow the tube to sit on your table without rolling. Crumple a small piece of brown or gray construction paper into a tight ball and glue it on top of the tube as the body of your squirrel. Crumple a smaller piece of the same color construction paper into a tight ball for the head of the squirrel and glue it on top of the body. Cut arm, leg and tail shapes from the brown or gray construction paper. Glue the body parts onto your squirrel. You can curl the tail before gluing it to your squirrel by wrapping it around a pencil first. Decorate the head by gluing on circles for the eyes, a triangle for the nose and yarn for the mouth. Add two rectangular teeth.
Cut a profile shape of a squirrel from a piece of plain paper or tag board. Paint the squirrel shape with white glue mixed with a bit of water. Sprinkle dry coffee grounds onto the squirrel shape. Decorate the finished squirrel with googly eyes and dry, broken fettuccine noodles for teeth.
Cut a tree shape with three large branches from construction paper. Glue colored tissue paper on the branches to represent fall leaves. While the glue is drying, cut a squirrel shape from brown or gray construction paper and decorate it with crayons or markers. Cut two acorn shapes from orange or yellow construction paper and color the tops of the acorns brown. Punch holes in each of the branches and at the tops of the squirrel and acorns. Tie the squirrel and acorns to the tree with yarn. Punch an extra hole at the top of the tree to hang the mobile from the ceiling.
