The classic paper bag puppet gets a feline twist with this activity. Color, paint or cover a paper bag with construction paper in the color you wish your puppet cat's fur to be. Draw, paint or use glued-on buttons or paper cut-outs to create eyes, a nose and mouth for your cat. Add cut-out paper ears and paper or pipe cleaner whiskers. Finally glue on cut-out paper paws and a paper or pipe cleaner tail to complete your cat. Children may participate in free play with the puppet, or extend the art activity into performing arts by allowing the child to put on a puppet show with the puppet.
Plastic foam creates a different cat puppet that is made from common items. These puppets may also be used for puppet shows as described above. Draw an outline of a cat's head on a plastic foam tray or plate. Use a colored tray or color or paint the cat whatever color you like. Cut out the shape and add facial features. Draw on or glue on cut out or googly eyes. Draw or glue on a nose and mouth. Draw on or glue on paper or pipe cleaner whiskers. Finally, tape or glue the cat's head onto a drinking straw (use a regular straw or a colored straw of your choice).
The cardboard from the center of a toilet paper roll is also the center of this art activity. Cover the roll in construction paper or felt in the color of your choice. Add spots or stripes drawn on or cut out of paper or felt. Draw a cat's head on a piece of construction paper or felt, and cut it out. Cut out a nose and mouth from paper or felt. Cut out felt or paper eyes, or use googly eyes. Also cut out felt or paper whiskers and legs, use a pipe cleaner to make a tail. Glue the various body parts onto the cat. After the glue has dried, the cat can be displayed in your child's room or in another special place in your home.
