How to Make Skateboard Wax

Riding a rail on your board takes skill, balance and a whole lot of practice. What you need is finesse; what you don't need is friction . While you can't entirely eliminate the forces of nature, you can cut down on the friction between your skateboard and your rail by slicking things up a bit. Skateboard wax applied to curbs, ledges, rails and to the trucks of your board will reduce friction and speed you and your board along your ledge. While boarders in a pinch have been known to slick surfaces with a bar of soap, skateboard wax is a better fit. It's is easy to make, easy to apply and with a little effort, you can choose colors and shapes to give your wax the same custom look as your board.

Instructions

  1. Wax Away

    • 1

Choose your mold. Wax has a low enough melting point that even a plastic mold will do.

    • 2

Coat the mold with soap or a non-stick cooking spray to make it easier to remove the wax once it hardens.

    • 3

Cut the gulf wax or craft wax into small pieces –this allows it to melt more quickly.

    • 4

Use a double boiler or go the disposable route. Cut the top off a soda can and place it in a pan of boiling water. When you’re done, you can toss the can instead of scrubbing the wax out of the second pan.

    • 5

Place about a tablespoon of petroleum jelly in the double boiler and allow to melt.

    • 6

Add the wax pieces. Allow to melt.

    • 7

Choose a color. If you’re using clear wax, you may want to add the cut up pieces of a colored candle or a crayon for color.

    • 8

      Allow to melt fully.

    • 9

      Pour into mold.

    • 10

Allow to harden fully –a day is a good idea.

    • 11

Pop the wax out of the mold and you’re ready to go.
