How to Make Encaustic Tiles

Encaustic tiles are cement or ceramic tiles made with an uncolored base and topped with a layer of colored cement or ceramic poured in a traditional pattern. But you can also make encaustic tiles using the encaustic painting technique over geometric pieces of wood or cement backer board. Encaustic painting is painting with hot colored wax. The different colored waxes are melted in separate containers and painted on in many layers to achieve a three-dimensional look. Tiles painted with wax cannot be used for regular tile installations, as they are sensitive to heat and wear. But they can be displayed as beautiful pieces of art.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut pieces of plywood or cement backer board to the size and shape of the desired tile.

    • 2

Heat an electric griddle to between 170 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Pour one cup of clear beeswax beads and one-quarter cup of encaustic resin into a clean coffee tin and place the tin on the hot griddle. Allow the wax medium to melt completely. Stir the medium until it is well mixed.

    • 4

Pour some of the clear encaustic wax base into each of the tuna tins. The number of tins depends on how many colors you wish to work with. Add pigments of different colors to the wax in the tuna tins and stir. Use as much pigment as you need to get the depth of color you want.

    • 5

Paint directly onto the wood or cement tile with the hot waxes. Use brushes of various sizes to create your design or place cookie cutters on the tiles and pour wax into the shapes. Paint a different colored wax around the cookie mold. Allow each layer of wax to harden before painting another layer of hot wax on top. Paint as many layers as you wish.

    • 6

Clean your brushes thoroughly between pigments by heating on the hot griddle and wiping clean with a paper towel. Ideally, you should use different brushes for the different colored waxes.

    • 7

Display your encaustic tiles away from very hot surfaces or direct sunlight.
