How to Make a Sink Mold

A sink mold could be perceived in two ways. Either a solid interior of the sink is being cast, likely to file and shape into an art piece, or the exterior of the sink is being cast as is used in sink production. The fabrication of sinks for the do-it-yourselfer is easiest done and repeated with concrete as the medium. Anything can be cast, so creativity in sculpting a new sink mold or series of sink molds is recommended.

Instructions

  1. Casting a Sink

    • 1

Measure the sink to determine the board size.

    • 2

Center the sink basin on the acrylic board.

    • 3

Outline the sink on the board with the pencil.

    • 4

Drill a hole in the board on the interior edge of the circle and cut out the drawn hole with the jigsaw. This will serve as a spacer board.

    • 5

Place the sink on a baseboard and place the spacer board on top of that board over the sink.

    • 6

Mark the alignment on the boards with a single line using the marker.

    • 7

Remove the spacer board and create a gasket with the modeling clay around the perimeter of the sink. This will prevent rubber from leaking while the mold forms. Realign the spacer board onto the gasket.

    • 8

Screw the boards together or use acorn nuts to attach them.

    • 9

Assemble the walls of the mold box with screws.

    • 10

Seal the seams of the box with the hot glue gun and plug up any screw holes with the clay.

    • 11

Spray the sink with mold release.

    • 12

Mix rubber molding in the 5-gallon bucket.

    • 13

Pour the molding over the sink.

    • 14

Attach the reverse base board and allow the mold to dry for 16 hours.

    • 15

Remove the surrounding boards once the molding has cured. Remove the sink. The molds are complete and ready to cast.
