How to Create Stop Motion on an iMac

Stop motion animation has been a movie staple for decades. It's allowed giant gorillas to climb skyscrapers, dinosaurs to run amok and crazed robots to terminate their prey. Stop motion is simply a series of photographs played at high speed to trick the eye into thinking the images are moving. Using a digital camera and the software already installed on your iMac, you can create your own stop motion movie.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a story that you can tell with toys, action figures or other inanimate objects.

    • 2

Take pictures, each representing a fraction of a second. For example, put a doll at one end of a table and take a picture, then move it an inch and take another picture. Move it another inch and take a third picture. Keep doing this until you've moved the doll across the table.

    • 3

Import all of the pictures into iPhoto.

    • 4

Launch iMovie and import the pictures.

    • 5

Click Media > Photos > Show Photo Settings.

    • 6

Reduce the photo time (the slider with the rabbit and turtle) as low as it will go and click "OK."

    • 7

Drag the photos into the project.

    • 8

Add dialogue, music and sound or video effects.

    • 9

      Save your iMovie.
