Innovative Uses of Technology in Performance Art

Performance artists have an array of props available to them that their predecessors could not have imagined. Technology can have a surprising amount of uses in performance and can enhance an artist's work. Artists have always experimented with any medium available to them and worked in tandem with such media to create innovative work that sheds new light on everyday objects.
  1. Lighting

    • Unusual lighting can be used to create light and shadow in a performance. Lighting has come a long way from static, fixed stage lights and can be manipulated to create a number of effects. Laser lighting can be used to create shapes in a darkened room. Light through glass can create interesting shapes and displays. If the artist would like to make himself a source of light, clothing fitted with LEDs (light emitting diodes) can amplify and complement movement. If the artist's budget does not extend to creating or purchasing such clothing, hand-held fluorescent lighting can be used to illuminate the artist or her props at appropriate moments in the performance. Such lighting can also be used to create shadows or shadow puppets.

    Sound

    • Distorting sounds can add another element to performance art.

The right use of sound can complement an artist's performance, and sounds can be created and stored on a laptop. A performance artist may choose to manipulate these sounds to create intrigue, and editing software such as Adobe Audition or Sony Sound Forge can be used to slow or increase speed or to add effects to the sound. Distorting an everyday sound can help catch the audience's attention. Playing sounds through speakers set in different places at varying intervals can add an extra sensory effect to a performance.

    Visual

    • There are a number of visual displays that can be created with technology. Electricity can be used to create performance art--although you should be warned that this can be a dangerous use of technology and requires rigorous testing and study. Dr. Austin Richards created a character called Dr. Megavolt, who conducts electricity through the use of a suit that utilizes Tesla coils. Film technology can also add to a performance piece and projectors can be used to project images and short video pieces onstage. Shapes and pictures can also be projected and the artist can interact with these or operate them from a distance without involving himself in the piece.
