How to Make Chinese Paper Stars

Also known as a shuriken or throwing star, this paper craft model of the classic ninja weapon only takes a few minutes to construct. The literal translation of the "shuriken" is hand-hidden blade, but the only cuts this version makes are the paper variety. Use this Chinese paper star as a costume accessory or for casual play, or construct models with fancy paper to create decorative ornaments.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the paper in half, then unfold it. Using the scissors, cut the paper along the folded lines into two 3-inches by 6-inches rectangles.

    • 2

Fold each rectangle in half "hot dog" style, which creates an elongated rectangle, versus "hamburger" style, which forms a more squat shape. Fold the rectangles in half again, this time using "hamburger style"; the two papers should now measure 2-inches by 1-inch. Unfold only the last fold on each paper, keeping the crease intact.

    • 3

Using the crease as a guide, fold the left bottom portion of the long rectangle diagonally to where the left edge of the paper now sits directly on top of the fold. Fold down the top right of the same rectangle diagonally, so that the right edge of the paper sits on top of the crease and against the other edge; the paper should now be folded into a stretched "Z" shape.

    • 4

Repeat the process with the other long rectangle, except fold the bottom right and top left to create a mirror image, or an "S" shape.

    • 5

Flip over both folded sheets horizontally so they now resemble the opposite letter; each shape is now made of two squares held together in the center by a parallelogram. The "S" should be on the left side, and you should fold up the bottom left corner of the bottom square of the "S" to turn it into a triangle. Fold the top right square down to create another triangle.

    • 6

Repeat in mirror image on the "Z"; now both folded shapes appear to be two triangles sitting on top of each other but still retain modified "S" and "Z" shapes.

    • 7

Fold the bottom left triangle on the "S" in half; repeat with top right triangle. Repeat in the mirror image with the "Z" shape; you now have two parallelograms.

    • 8

Turn one piece over and unfold the last fold partially, so there are two points sticking upward. Repeat with the other shape, but leave the points sticking downward.

    • 9

Set the upward pointing folded shape on top of the downward pointing shape; arrange them so they make the shape of a four-point star.

    • 10

Tuck one of the upward facing points into the closest upward facing fold. Repeat with the other upward facing point. Tuck one of the downward facing slits into the closest downward facing fold; repeat with the final point to complete the Chinese paper star, or shuriken.
