Examine the particular candy you will be designing the wrapper for. Candy varies widely in shape and size, necessitating different styles of wrappers for different products. Depending on the candy, it may be most appropriate to design a traditional twisted wrapper, one folded like a gift-wrapped box, a sleeve to cover all or part of the candy, or another style.
Wrap the candy in paper, using the wrapping style you decide upon, to find the exact dimensions needed for your wrapper. The wrapper should overlap itself to prevent the candy from being exposed, but excessive overlap will only waste materials. Start by wrapping the candy with a larger piece of paper than will be necessary, and then gradually trim it down to get the right size.
Create a new document in a graphics editing program that is the same size as the wrapper. This document should either be in vector graphics format or have a minimum of 300 dpi resolution for clear printing.
Check the paper wrapper to determine where the graphics and text you add to the document will end up when it is placed over the candy. Note that candy is often seen from all sides, so try to repeat images and labels enough to make them visible from multiple angles.
Place the candy's logo (or company logo) in a prominent place on the label, and make it large enough to be clearly visible.
Choose a color indicative of the flavor of the candy. Make this the the primary coloring of the label for easy at-a-glance identification.
Indicate in writing somewhere on the label exactly what the candy is and what flavor it is. If it is fruit flavored, you can substitute a picture of the fruit for that text.
Write clearly on the wrapper that the candy contains nuts or any other common allergen if it does.
Print your wrapper design on plain paper, cut it out and wrap the candy with it to test the design. You should try several different layouts with the same images and labels in order to find the one that works best for your wrapper.
