Measure the wrapper. Remove the original wrapper from your candy bar and measure its length and width. Record the dimensions of the wrapper.
Measure the printed areas of the wrapper—for example, the logo or text on the front of the bar, the ingredients list and the nutrition facts. Record the measurements of each of these sections. Drawing a rough sketch of the wrapper on scratch paper can help you visualize the layout.
Use a graphics program to create a new image with the same dimensions as the candy-bar wrapper.
Create a new transparent layer in your image on top of the background. In this layer, use the rectangle tool to draw rectangles designating each printed area on the wrapper. These rectangles will serve as guides—this layer can be made invisible before printing.
Leave a blank space of about 0.25 inches at edge of the back of the wrapper. This allows the wrapper to overlap for gluing.
Save your template.
Open the template you created in the previous section (if you have not already done so).
Select the background (bottom) layer of the image and use the paint bucket tool to fill in the entire background with the color of your choice.
Create a new transparent layer on top of the template layer with the rectangles.
Work in the new layer to cover each rectangle on the template with text and images appropriate to your event. You can use images and text that mimic the design of the original wrapper. For example, some birth announcement wrappers mimic Hershey's Milk Chocolate bars. They use “IT'SABOY” in place of “HERSHEY'S” and the baby's weight and length in place of ingredients. You may also want to create something completely original.
Make the template layer with the rectangles invisible so that the guides do not show on the printed wrapper.
Save your wrapper design.
Print your wrapper on printer paper.
Cut out the candy bar wrapper along its borders using a pair of scissors. If you are covering many candy bars, you may prefer to use a paper cutter.
Lay the wrapper face down on your work surface and lay the candy bar face down on top of it.
Apply glue or double-sided tape to one edge of the wrapper.
Wrap the wrapper around the candy bar, overlapping the top side over the bottom side of the wrapper, and press gently to set the adhesive.
Adjust the wrapper so that the front of the wrapper is aligned with the front of the candy bar.
